Mother Osprey provides shade for young
I was watching these birds for about an hour in cloudy weather. As soon as the clouds cleared and the temperature started to shoot up, the mother positioned herself between her young and the sun and held her wings partially outward, providing shade for them. I watched her do this same thing in the midday sun for over 1 hour, never moving and never drawing her wings in. These birds know more than some humans about the dangers of leaving children out in the heat (i.e. the morons who leave their kids in hot cars during the summer months).

Are you Madeira'd yet? ( near the Pestana Casino Park Hotel in Funchal ).
