Roman Solar Shades
- Solar radiation management (SRM) projects are a type of geoengineering which seek to reflect sunlight and thus reduce global warming. They do not reduce greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere, and thus do not address problems such as ocean acidification caused by these gases.
(Solar shade) A space sunshade or sunshield can be described as analogous to a parasol that s or otherwise reduces some of a star's rays, preventing them from hitting a planet and thereby reducing its insolation, which results in less heating of the planet.

Roman Fort from Masada, 2/1978
Masada is a fort located in the Judaean desert, overlooking the Dead Sea and Jordan. It is on top of a plateau rock formation, and is accesible by cable car.
Masada became under siege during the first Jewish-Roman War, which led to the 'suicide' of all its Jewish Zeolots inhabitants when they were of verge of defeat. Neverthless, Judaism strongly discourages suicide, therefore lots were taken and they slain each other in turn.
It later became a palace for Herod, who used it as a refuge for himself in case of a revolt.
The site was excavated in the 60's and had remained untouched by humans for nearly 2000 years, due to its remoteness.
Masada has also become a symbol of Jewish determination, and new recruits to the Israeli army are sworn in at Masada and proclaim "Never again shall Masada fall".

View from the south-east corner. You're seeing (from left to right) the high master bathroom window, my two office windows, high media room window, around the corner to the two media room windows, high sunroom windows. This is the westfacing side, so we kept the windows small to prevent too much heat infiltration, except for my office where it can't be helped, so I have some light reducing blinds for that room (a double roman shade).
Note also that only the chimney and the opening for one of the solar tubes appears on the south-facing side of the roof -- all the rest of the vents and piping appears on the north side. This was just lucky, not planned, but the result is that we have a significant amount of perfectly angled solar south facing gable roof on which to mount future solar panels.
